The Honeybee Crisis: Real Causes & Solutions – Lecture & Workshop

The Beekeepers Guild of Santa Barbara cordially invites you to a Biodynamic Beekeeping Workshop with Gunther Hauk.

Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to learn from one of the leading bee advocates in the world.

It is often difficult to discern between causes and symptoms when looking at illness. In our culture viruses, bacteria and parasites are mistakenly seen as the cause for illness. When in reality, they are the symptoms of a weakened immune system. When we are healthy, we can ward off disease more easily. At this time of severe honeybee crisis, we must ask ourselves not only which agricultural practices and chemicals contribute to the severe colony losses, but also which beekeeping practices have been developed over the last 150 years which contribute to weakening the immune system of the honeybee. It is time, and of the highest importance, to face the fact that beekeeping practices have become as exploitive and mechanized as the rest of our agricultural practices. Biodynamic, sustainable beekeeping methods offer real solutions

We will take a look at the development of beekeeping in the last 2000 years.

Understanding the complexity of this creature from a spiritual point of view will help us regain the awe and wonder inherent in this highly evolved insect. A logical examination of current practices, in view of the impact we have had on the health of the honeybee, will bring us to beekeeping methods that respect the honeybee’s needs, and boost her capacity to thrive.

Topics will include:

  • A brief historical sketch: from the sacred     to the mundane
  • Understanding the colony as an organism
  • The vital importance of swarming and having naturally raised queens
  • What is wax really? Working without foundations
  • Mites, hive beetles, foulbrood, etc.
  • Treatments and teas
  • Pros and cons of different hive forms and materials
  • Bee forage, care of the land

In 1996 Gunther Hauk co-founded the Pfeiffer Center – one of the first biodynamic training programs in the US. Since then he has been invited to teach around the world. His book Toward Saving the Honeybee was first published in 2002. In 2006, Gunther and his wife, Vivian, founded Spikenard Farm. His work was featured in two full-length documentary films about the honeybee crisis – “Queen of the Sun” (2010) and “Vanishing of the Bees” (2009). Gunther also produced his own educational film “Hour of Decision” (2015).
