Early Childhood:

PRESCHOOL + KINDERGARTEN: “I AM THE WORLD”

At the Santa Barbara Waldorf School, our Early Childhood program offers young children a warm, homelike beginning that preserves the wonder of early childhood while gently laying the foundation for healthy intellectual growth.

Free from academic pressure, children learn through imaginative play, creative exploration, and a deep connection with nature—developing confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our program welcomes children ages 2 years, 9 months to 6 years, with the guideline that students must turn six by June 1 to enter first grade.

Within this nurturing environment, a sensory-rich rhythm of play, story, song, and movement encourages children to explore the natural world and form their first friendships.

As they grow, our developmentally appropriate and experiential curriculum weaves together practical, artistic, and academic activities, supporting each child’s unfolding with care and reverence.

Guiding Principles

  • What It Looks Like:
Teachers model purposeful work—baking bread, mending, gardening—while children absorb skills, language, and social cues through imaginative free play with open‑ended, natural materials.

  • What it looks like:
Each day, week, and season follows a gentle, predictable flow (morning circle → outdoor play → snack → story → rest). Steady rhythms build security, self‑regulation, and healthy habits.

  • What it looks like:
Quiet, inward moments (storytelling, watercolor painting) alternate with lively, outward ones (singing games, outdoor exploration), mirroring a child’s natural need to breathe in and out.

  • What it looks like:
Classrooms are filled with soothing colors, soft lighting, silk, and wood. These materials satisfy the senses the senses without overstimulation. Screens and loud electronic toys are absent.

  • What it looks like:
Movement, language, social‑emotional skills, and practical life abilities are nurtured long before academics formally begin in Grade 1.

    1. Warm Welcome & Free Play
Children arrive to candle‑lit calm, help grind grain for snack, build blanket forts, or dress dolls—developing fine motor skills and creativity.

    2. Circle Time (In‑Breath)
Seasonal songs, verses, finger plays, and rhythmic movement enhance language, balance, and memory.

    3. Outdoor Exploration (Out‑Breath)
Daily walks, tree climbing, and gardening foster physical strength, risk assessment, and love of nature.

    4. Shared Organic Snack
The class might eat the bread they kneaded that morning, learning gratitude and table manners.

    5. Story & Puppetry
Teachers tell a nature tale or folk story from memory, often reenacted with simple silk‑wrapped figures—building rich vocabulary and inner imagery.

    6. Rest / Quiet Play
Young bodies reset; older kindergarteners engage in handcrafts like finger knitting.

    Closing Circle & Farewell

    • Mixed‑Age Groups: Younger children learn from older peers; older ones practice leadership and empathy.

    • Festivals & Seasons: Celebrations (Michaelmas, Lantern Walk, May Day) give children a joyful sense of time and culture.

    • Parent Partnership: Regular conferences, at‑home rhythm guidance, and community work days keep home and school in harmony.

    • Readiness for Grade 1: By age 6 .5–7, children have matured physically (loose baby teeth, upright posture), socially, and imaginatively, making them ready to begin formal academic work with enthusiasm.

The Emerging Child

Our Early Childhood students typically enter first grade confident, curious, socially adept, and physically well‑coordinated—with a deep, joyful relationship to the natural world and a secure inner foundation for the intellectual journey ahead.
